Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a great Tibetan Master was renowned for saying 'There is only one Ati' - meaning there is only one enlightened mind wherever you look. The ego, maya and samsara don't have to be gotten rid of as none of them actually exist. There is only Spirit. Virtually no-one got it - no-one was ready for this radical realisation and so he taught 'lesser' practices so that we could lead us to the always present Spirit.
Adi Da ( an American born adept) also taught nothing but an enquiry into why you want to attain enlightenment in the first place. The very desire is infact nothing but the grasping tendency of the ego. The perfect practice is to quit the search and inquire into the motive for seeking it. We seek inorder to avoid the present and yet the present is where it's at! We are already enlightened spirit and it is about reconnecting with what is already there.
